Pool offers free swimming alternative during popular dam closure

While Ewen Maddock Dam’s popular swimming area remains closed for dam upgrade work, Mooloolah State School pool is offering free entry through for those who fancy a dip to beat the heat.

While Ewen Maddock Dam’s swimming area remains closed for dam upgrade work, Mooloolah State School pool is offering free entry until April 2021

The free entry period runs from Sunday 13 December until Thursday 1 April as part of an initiative by Seqwater, the Mooloolah State School P&C and Swim am byth to provide swimming opportunities to the local community during the summer.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Neil Brennan said the free entry was a way to thank the community and recreation visitors for their ongoing cooperation and patience as the essential upgrade work at Ewen Maddock Dam was completed.

Mr Brennan said the free entry offer was in line with project delivery for Ewen Maddock Dam upgrade, which began earlier this year and remained on track to be completed mid-2021.

“As one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular recreation spots, we knew the community would be missing the opportunity for a swim at Ewen Maddock Dam during the summer,” he said.

“We’re pleased to be able to partner with the Mooloolah State School P&C and Swim am byth to offer this alternative for people to enjoy free swimming.“

Mr Brennan said the essential upgrade at Ewen Maddock Dam would strengthen the existing embankment and raise the dam wall to increase its floodwater capacity.

“Dam upgrades like this often require lake levels to be lowered and recreation areas to be closed to create a safe work environment,” Mr Brennan said.

While recreation closures at Ewen Maddock Dam include all on-water activities such as kayaking and swimming, other recreation facilities such as the walking trails remain open, with modified access points to multi-use trails around the lake.

Seqwater has upgraded the trail users and horse float parking area to allow continued access for multi trail users and horse riders during the upgrade.

Other recreation improvements will include new shelters, new tables and benches, new vessel launch pad and wash bay, BBQ facilities, connected concrete pathways and an improved beach sitting laydown area to Maddock Park.
