Public notices and safety

Take care when swimming, skiing and boating on Seqwater dams. Seqwater’s dams and lakes are part of natural systems and have naturally occurring characteristics that you need to be mindful of when swimming, skiing or boating.

These characteristics change regularly and include changing bacteria levels and water debris above and below water.

This is a very normal and expected occurrence in any natural system, so if you choose to undertake any recreational activities on the dams and lakes you need to take care at all times for your safety and that of your family.

You should always check the Seqwater website to view the Public Notices or Recreational Information before you visit any of our recreational areas.

Temporary closure of recreation trails - Ewen Maddock Dam

In August some of the recreational trails at Ewen Maddock Dam will be temporarily closed on the northern side of the lake for harvesting works.

During this time Seqwater, will harvest exotic pine trees on land around Ewen Maddock Dam as part of a weed control project to protect the natural vegetation.

Exotic pine trees invade and dominate natural vegetation which decreases habitat quality and can potentially increase bush fire intensity. Harvesting this timber is considered the safest and most cost effective method of undertaking the required weed control program. This will also have the best outcome for the natural environment.

The harvesting works are expected to start on 9 August 2010 and take 3 weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions. Affected sections of

Seqwater land will be closed to public access and the recreational trail between Gympie St North and Kowald Rd at Ewen Maddock Dam will be temporarily closed. There will be signage placed on the trails to advise users at the site.

The harvest operation will involve forestry machinery felling and stacking the trees on harvest sites within Seqwater land. These works will occur during normal business hours and is expected to last for approximately two to three weeks.

Hinze Dam recreation facilities

Hinze Dam is open for recreational boating. However, some hiking trails and picnicking facilities are closed under the completion of the Stage 3 development in December 2010.

The new Western Boat Ramp at Hinze Dam (Lake Advancetown) will be opening soon. It is located off Nerang-Murwillimbah Road. The Western Boat Ramp recreation area includes toilet facilities and parking for up to ten cars with trailers. The gates to the recreation area will be open from 6am to 6pm each day (access to the lake is only permitted during daylight hours).

Due to recent acts of vandalism, the new Western Boat Ramp which was due to open on Monday 21 June 2010 will remain closed. We are committed to providing the very best facilities and the opening of the new boat ramp and recreation area will be delayed until the damage can be rectified. Access to the lake will be maintained via the existing temporary boat ramp. Please watch this space for the revised opening date.

The new Eastern Boat Ramp recreation area will be opened later in 2010.
