Temporary shutdown of Noosa Water Treatment Plant

Seqwater is refurbishing the Noosa Water Treatment Plant at Lake Macdonald, requiring a temporary shutdown of the plant.

As a result of the refurbishment works, which will include an upgrade of critical infrastructure within the plant, water will predominantly be supplied to homes and businesses around the Sunshine Coast and Noosa areas from the Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant and at times may be blended with water supplied from North Pine Water Treatment Plant.

Due to Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant fluoride dosing system upgrade works, the water supplied to the Sunshine Coast and Noosa areas is unlikely to contain fluoride while Noosa Water Treatment Plant is offline.

Queensland Health and Unitywater have been advised of the temporary shutdown of the Noosa Water Treatment Plant.

Queensland Health has advised there is no need for the community to take any action with a shutdown of this duration as the dental health benefits of fluoride are achieved and maintained over many years.

Water fluoridation is the process of adding fluoride to a water source so the level of fluoride in the water reaches the recommended level for optimal dental health.

In South East Queensland, fluoride is added to the water supply at a level of 0.8 milligrams per litre in accordance with the Water Fluoridation Act 2008, Water Fluoridation Regulation 2020 and Water Fluoridation Code of Practice 2021.

It is anticipated the Noosa Water Treatment Plant will return to operation in August 2024.
