Scenic Rim lakes re-open with some restrictions for Easter

In good news for recreators, Scenic Rim lakes Moogerah and Maroon will re-open in time for Easter.

Lake Maroon will re-open to all water-based recreation in time for Easter, while Lake Moogerah will re-open with some restrictions to in-water activities.

Scenic Rim lakes Moogerah and Maroon will re-open in time for Easter. However, Lake Moogerah will remain closed to in-water activities such as swimming, water skiing and jet skiing.

Seqwater water quality testing following recent high rainfall has shown pathogen levels present in the water at Lake Moogerah pose an unacceptably high risk to public health.

Tests showed Lake Maroon can re-open to all permitted in-water and on-water recreation.

Boating, paddling and fishing are not affected by the closure to in-water recreation at Lake Moogerah.

Visitors can enjoy in-water recreation such as skiing at Lake Maroon, which is approximately 30-minutes drive north-west of Lake Moogerah. Lake Maroon is currently above 90 per cent capacity.

Lake Moogerah, which had reached a low of 12.5% in early-March, has now risen above 42%.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Neil Brennan said Seqwater greatly appreciated the impact on holidaymakers but public safety and health was paramount.

“It is not unusual following large rain events where dams refill quickly to result in an increase in pathogen levels. Exposure could result in gastrointestinal illnesses and alike,” Mr Brennan said.

“We understand many in the community will be disappointed. We will continue to monitor water quality and re-open Lake Mogerah to in-water activities as soon as it is safe to do so.”
